Starting an MSA

1 How can we start an MSA ?

Go to the student activities/student union office in your school/college. Ask for the  club information package.  This package usually explains club policies, number of members needed, election policies etc.

Get a club sponsor.  Usually it has to be a college faculty/staff member who can sponsor the club.  Try to find a Muslim staff/faculty member. If there are none then ask one of the other teachers who you think will do a good job.  In college usually the world religion teachers are willing to do so.

Make a list of positions in the cabinet and write down their duties/responsibilities.

Spread the word and have elections under the supervision of the sponsor.  Then get as many members as you can.

2 We were told that we cannot have a religious club in the school
because its promotion of religion. what can we do?

Under the law you have the right of freedom of speech. If students are initiating a religious activity its considered exercising that freedom yet faculty may not do that because it is considered promotion of religion. These days most of the schools and colleges are aware of the MSA’s, so hopefully there should not be a problem.  Its recommended that when you make a request for the club to write a better and let all the interested students sign it.  Also try to find out if there are any other religious clubs existing in your school or county so that you can use to fight your case better.

3 Our school wont approve our club. what can we do?

If the activities office is taking long in replying or is not approving the club then talk to the principal of the school or the president of the college.  Make sure that you speak with a profession and polite manner. If that doesn’t help, contact us at nvmsa@nvmsa.8m.net
